It's funny
You think you have it all right
Bu then the rug gets pulled from under you
The Society Effect
You will think you know a person
Then they prove you wrong and betray you
The Society Effect
The universe seems to run on an ever-changing loop
One moment you're having the best day
Then someone has to ruin it.
The Society Effect
When everything you love goes "Poof"
Like a puff of smoke from a cigarette
You're left with broken shards of glass that was your heart
And you're the only one there to clean it up
But you keep cutting your hands on the sharp edges
You just can't fix yourself anymore
I'm tired of running
The Society Effect

I wrote this poem when I was twelve years old. I was in middle school, and when you're in middle school kids start to get mean. Really mean. You normally don't walk out of high school with the same friends you walked in with in middle school. And if you do, I congratulate you, for you and your friends were able to stick together through each others' changes. I was dealing with a lot of verbal, physical, and even sexual harassment at the time I wrote this, which is what drove the very descriptive words and metaphors. I feel like writing poetry from life experiences brings out a lot more emotion. Interesting fact about this poem, this was the first ever poem I wrote that became published in an anthology through Creative Communication's Poetic Power contests. I have been published five times as of August 2016 in these anthologies, and I am very honored and humbled by it. I'd like to think there is someone out there who can relate to this poem, maybe even you reading this. And if there is I feel sorry for you, but at the same time do know you are not alone. Anyway, I think i'll end this post here. Thank you for reading.
